Caption written by Lloyd Kerr June 2009: The second Goulter homestead at Hawkesbury built about 1851. Cyrus Goulter arrived in the late 1840s from Nelson to assist William Budge in surveying the Lower Wairau Valley. Turning to farming he took up fertile land by the Omaka River and built a cob cottage for his family. We see mature trees and a well established garden. The generous veranda area says a lot about Marlborough's searing summers. |
