| Ingot holder and bar of [pretend] gold. Used for smelting gold from a dredge. Object is on the right underneath the crucible in image 1, inside the railway trolley. A typed note with the object is as follows: "The end product, "The gold Bar (Ingot)." The gold was smelted down in a special room at the battery and poured into the gold bar moulds. Enough bars were poured for the pack horses to carry, and sometimes these were held in a safe at the battery site until a trip could be made to the nearest town for the sale of the bars or ingots. This gold ingot was made from a special Bank of New Zealand mould and would have only been sold direct to that bank. On today's [1980s?] value the above gold ingot would be worth about $88,162.00." Found with the 1997 gold mining display. |
