Description |
Red silk velvet furnishing fabric made into mantlepiece scarf or mantle fringe. This was in the collection in pieces as well as two corner shelves complete with scarfs - at the moment one of these corner shelves is in the museum as part of the wine exhibition. Each "scallop" is a separate piece of rectangular material joined together with a running stitch which pulls up to form the scallop edge. The scarf is dramatically trimmed with a woven tape in pink, green, grey/blue faded to fawn, with bobbles in complimentary colours. A folded piece of material with the same trim covers each join. Fabric/Weave: Velvet/silk/wool
The condition is good. There is discolouration, scorch marks, places where the velvet pile has disappeared due to wear and heat. Some bobbles show sign of scorching. There are three small pieces of velvet and one corner bracket in storage. We reconstructed the pieces to fit our mantelpiece - the original running stitch was heavy white linen thread and then black cotton. There are signs that the scarf had been nailed in place. |
