Collection MHS (unaccessioned) Textiles
Description Cream silk taffeta wedding gown with finely pleated silk organza lace trim, worn by a member of the Redwood family. [Pam Saunders says this gown is possibly connected with a Redwood from Cob Cottage. Her email to Jenny Pierson, 21 April 2010. Also see notes for Norm Brayshaw's information].

Construction details.
Bodice:
Fitted bodice coming into small waist. Cuirass bodice with square neck. Front button closure. Two bones follow vertical front darts and two at side seams. Two verticle darts below bustline. Hand overcast machine straight seams. Square neckline backed with a double layer of silk ribbon hand stitched in place.
Sleeves:
Straight set-in sleeves finished below elbow with a trim of pleated organza and machine lace 7.5cm gathered to form a deep frill. Machine straight armhole seams which have been overcast. Reinforced with silk tape.
Skirt:
Bustle at top of skirt. Extremely complex construction of the skirt, bustle and overskirt. Overskirt on left side seam 15cm lower than right side - later adjustment perhaps. 44cm waist. Petersham ribbon reinforced waistline caught at side seams and finishes centre front with two brass hooks. Stiff muslin hems with lace trim double depth centre back lines the gown. Each section is lined with off white fine cotton.
Embellishments:
The finely pleated trim outlines the neckline then follows the seam which forms the body of the bustle at back of grament. Hand finished button holes. 15 Mother-of-pearl buttons down centre front. The only original one is second to bottom with a metal shank and is out of round (oval).
Alterations:
Button replaced. Some adjustment threads have come undone.

Part of Ethel Collins collection. Some of the clothing collection attributed to Mrs. Ethel Collins was gathered before she became a member of MHS. Later, as volunteer in charge of the Textile Department, garments were donated to her for the Society [see MHS minute book 5, page 211]. These garments joined her own donated collection and all became part of the MHS Textile Collection.
