Description |
A dress knitted in red wool. The bodice of the garment is knitted on circular needles in garter stitch and ribbed lace stitch with faggoting. The waistband is single rib. Stitches are picked up at the bottom of the bodice and then the skirt is of the ribbed lace stitch with faggoting. The petal sleeves, collar and peplum have been knitted separately in the same stitch. The collar (10cm) has a ruffled effect. The peplum has two layers of gathered knitting.
This frock was made and worn by Maisie Allport of George Street, Blenheim. She was a piano teacher who taught classical music during the 1950s and 1960s. She often performed on stage accompanying singers. She was a tiny energetic lady who was married to Jazz Allport, a senior teacher at the local college. |
