Description An unfinished sock on three steel knitting needles. The wool is Petone 4 ply fingering in the new "Peggy" shade 219 Khaki. The knitting on the needles can be seen between the knitting patterns in image 1.

Knitting for the soldiers. Wool was available through the Red Cross and other organisations. People knitted scarves, balaclavas, socks, bedsocks etc., in khaki, airforce blue and navy for the men in the forces. Knitting wool for othe rneeds was in very short supply and required clothing coupons. Knitting sessions were held fortnightly. Non-knitters minded the children and served afternoon tea.
