Description Volunteer period Officer's jacket, c.1880s. Textiles Manager, Pam Saunders says: the colour is Insignia Red; Antique gold braiding; Shoulder boards are metallic thread twist.

Worn by George Hoare, at the Coronation of George VI on 12 May 1937. George Hoare was a farmer of Tua Marina and represented the Nelson Marlborough Mounted Rifles as part of a contingent at the Coronation. He also wore a piupiu for the Maori haka.

The Volunteer Period: From 1886, New Zealand's defences were built upon a core of Permanent Militia, Police and a large, partially-trained Volunteer force. Volunteering was particularly strong in Marlborough, with units such as the Blenheim Rifle Volunteers and the Marlborough Mounted Rifles regularly holding camps and exercises in the district.
