Description |
One piece black sateen woman's costume trimmed with ribbon and jet beading. The manufature date (apart from being pre 1900) and the country of Origin are unknown. The original owner/wearer is also unknown, but the costume lastly belonged to the donor's mother, Mrs. Johnson.
The jacket covers a "faux" waistcoat front which is fastened to the left with a series of metal hooks and eyes. The high collar and yoke are made of machine lace. The high collar is outlined with gathered white lace and finished with an .8cm sateen edge. Waistcoat overlaps centre front and has 5 self-covered embroidered buttons down the front. There is a heavily boned underbodice that fastens centre front. The jacket is finished at edge with pleated silk ribbon and has .6cm jet embroidery outlining front edges to the side seam. The straight sateen oversleeve finishes below the elbow and is outlined with jet beading. The undersleeve finishes at the wrist and has jet beading and then silk ribbon pleated at the wrist. There is an underbodice which fastens at centre front with a series of hooks and eyes. The high collar is fastened at the back with 2 hooks and eyes. The armhole lining and outer material are sewn together and handstitched. The jacket is lined with striped twill cotton.
The skirt has a flat straight front panel and four gored panels, which are lightly gathered to form fullness at the back. It is finished with two rows of pleated ribbon 10cm/6 cm up from the hem. It is lined with black glazed cotton.
