Collection MHS (unaccessioned) Textiles
Date pre 1900
Description Two piece Woman's skirt and bolero type top of pale green cotton plain weave with lace insert. Manufacture date (other than pre 1900) and country of origin unknown. The original Owner/Wearer is also unknown.

The very full skirt is pleated onto a fawn petersham waistband. The pleats are topstitched to varying lengths from 22cm to 36cm in centre front, and at the back the pleats are stitched to a length of 18/16cm. The placket at centreback is fastened with 8 metal hooks and eyes. Inside the centre back opening is a small 15cm bustle pad. The skirt has a pale green glazed linen petticoat which is very heavily pleated and ruffled at the hemline. The seams are unfinished.
The top is unlined. It is fastened in the front with 4 hooks and eyes. The green cotton material is slightly gathered over the bust. It has a series of silver cord "flowers " finished with pink silk ribbon centres. The shoulder straps are finished with a lace insert. I would imagine that this outfit would have been worn over a highnecked blouse. It had flat round lead weights stitched into the inner front bodice. (They are no longer on the garment, but were originally, when the garment was first unpacked. It has been on display and perhaps the lead fell out at that time.)

This garment was originally accessioned into Textiles "red book" and given the number 363. At that time it was described as, "Ladies long pale green skirt - much tucked with frilled and ruffled underskirt attached - also small bustle pad attached".
