Caption 43 In front of William Brownlee's Blackball sawmill. Although the workers are unnamed, William Ross Brownlee has been identified [this is incorrect. It is most likely his son, John Wilson Brownlee. William Ross Brownlee died in 1917 aged 89, this man is much younger than that] sitting with a raised knee on the timber trolley. This mill had been constructed at the wharf terminus of more than 30 km of tramway, leading up the Pelorus River, and through the Rai Valley. Next to the mill, were the Blackball wharves, where sawn timber was dispatched to markets in both Islands. The locals included saw operators, timber stackers, possibly a saw doctor, tree fellers, wharf workers, office workers, rail engine drivers, surface men, and seamen. The man at the left holds a timber jack. 2004.080.0003 |
