| Description |
The bonnet is made from one piece of sprigged cotton (white with indigo/mauve coloured sprigs). It has three sets of four lines of cotton piping used for stiffening the body of the bonnet. Two ties for tying under the chin are attached either side. A drawstring tape is used to shape the bonnet.
Country of Origin: England.
Fabric/Weave: Plain weave/cotton
Original Owner/Wearer: Miss Elizabeth Guyer. Elizabeth Guyer came out as a companion to the fiancée of Mr. Sclanders of Nelson (see notes). This bonnet was worn on the voyage out - it was her everyday bonnet. She had a black silk hat for best. She was Mrs. Ethel Collins great -grandmother. Elizabeth married William Rankin in Nelson.
Part of Ethel Collins collection. Some of the clothing collection attributed to Mrs. Ethel Collins was gathered before she became a member of MHS. Later, as volunteer in charge of the Textile Department, garments were donated to her for the Society [see MHS minute book 5, page 211]. These garments joined her own donated collection and all became part of the MHS Textile Collection.
