Date 1860s
Description Womans Blue Silk Satin Gown, 1840s? (Probably 1860s) Most if not all handstitched - made by a very skilled dressmaker. V-necked bodice boned at sides, under bust and pointed in front. Epaulette effect with sleeve ruched above elbow. The neckline features a wide overcollar with 2cm silk fringing on outer edge finished with two silk rosettes in centre front. The gown is fastened centreback with 10 metal brass hooks and eyes. The skirt is made up of panels of 44cm wide material and has heavy cartridge pleating around waistline except centre front where the material is loosely tucked. Either side of the centre front skirt panel is a strip of fringed material (10cm wide) which is handstitched to the skirt and finished at the hemline with a silk rosette either side.
The bodice is lined with offwhite polished cotton. The skirt is lined with darker material. Allowances have been made to allow for garment to be let out at all the seams. The cartridge pleating is stabilised inside the garment with corded cotton . Running stitches hold the lining in place. Fabric/Weave: Satin Silk/ Satin. There is some stitching that has come undone at the waist. There is discolouration under the armpits.

Gown is on the right in image 12.

There is a purse in the same material - see 0000.600.0313.
