Description	1 sextant belonging to Captain Jackie Guard in 1827, as written by V.A. Logan on the receipt. Image 1 is Don Grady's picture of Jackie Guard's sextant which is a copy of one taken in 1959 for the Marlborough centenial exhibition and used in his book, Guards of the Sea, published in 1978. SEXTANTS: The first sextant was made by John Bird in 1759 of mahogany and brass. In the early 19th century master London instrument maker John Dolland made all brass sextants. In the first half of the 18th century there was a trend back to wooden framed octants and sextants to produce lighter instruments compared to those made of brass.
