Description Mr Isaac Gifford, early setler and farmer.

Mr. Gifford was born in England in 1819, came to New Zealand in 1843, and arrived in Wairau in 1858. He owned 2,100 acres in at Rapaura and was a member of the Spring Creek Road Board. He married Miss. M.A. Ford of Nelson, had three sons and five daughters and died in 1901.

You convey the idea that the Straw Consumer is not as safe as other engines, but I have made enquiries from the different farmers who have threshed with it, and they are perfectly satisfied that it is safer than with burning wood, and equal in keeping up steam to coal. Last year Mr. Isaac Gifford had his stacks on fire, but fortunately it was extinguished before much damage was done.
