Description
Photograph frame with four photographs and one empty space. Photograph captions, from left to right, are: Captain Baillie, Miss A. Baillie, Mrs. Ronaldson and Mr. and Mrs. L. Stowe. It's probable the photographs have been misnamed on the front of the frame as they are named in original handwriting on the backing board as 1) Captain Baillie, 2) Mrs. Baillie, 3) Miss A Baillie, 4) Mr. & Mrs. Ronaldson [missing], 5) Mr. & Mrs. Stowe but if they are true to label they would be: Captain Thomas George Baillie, mariner and harbour master at Picton, late of the Royal Navy, born 1828 Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, married Susannah Westcott (c.1832-1906) in 1857 in Bristol, England, died 2 June 1865 at Picton. His widow later married her husband's first cousin, Lieutenant William James Baillie in Picton. Miss A. Baillie. Adelaide, born 1835 at Hanwell, Middlesex, England, was the sister of Lieutenant William James Baillie (1830-1903). She remained unmarried and died at Picton on 6 January 1891. However, this portrait is similar to one of Nony Baillie, wife of Captain W.D.H., published in the Dominion, newspaper 25 November 1959. [Source of all the family information above is from Jenny Pierson's private records on the Baillie family, researched for a descendant, Brenda Fellowes (nee Baillie]. Mrs. Ronaldson. A William Ronaldson (1823-1917), Anglican minister, was incumbent at Picton (Vice T.L. Tudor) from November 1871-1876. He married Arabella Ridge (bapt. 1831-1898) in England in 1855. [source: mastertonanglican.org]. Mr. and Mrs. L. Stowe. A Mr. Leonard Stowe married Jane Greenwood in 1871 [Source: NZSG CD-Rom New Zealand Marriages 1836-1956, version 2, compiled 2006]. There is no Stowe marrying a Baillie or Ronaldson. Leonard Stowe died in 1920 aged 83 (born c. 1837) and is buried at Bolton Street cemetery in plot MO2.01. Jane Stowe died in 1931 aged 93 (born c.1838) and is buried in the same cemetery and plot [Source: NZSG CD-Rom New Zealand Burial Locator, version 2, compiled 2008]. However, the photographs may be of Captain W.D.H. Baillie and his wife Hannah (Nony) nee Greensill. Captain William Douglas Hall Baillie, born 22 February 1827 in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, married in Essex, England in 1854 and died in Maoribank, Wellington, New Zealand on 24 February 1922. Captain Baillie was a brother of Captain Thomas George Baillie and first cousin to William James and Adelaide Baillie.
