A black and white photograph showing a steam powered whale chaser boat with a harpooner having just made a kill.
A scan of this photograph will be used in the Changing European History Gallery 3 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009. ................................................................................................................................................................................Caption December 2009: A whale chaser with a new catch. The harpooner appears to be preparing to dart in a hand bomb-lance which will kill the animal. Then if it was in danger of sinking air would be pumped into the carcass. In 1910, whaling stepped up a level with the introduction of steam-powered chaser boats. The most successful of these operations was in Tory Channel. Each season, 100-200 Humpback Whales, caught in Cook Strait, were processed. |
