Caption December 2009: Making the initial cutting on a freshly caught Humpback Whale at Peranos' whaling station. The flenser would then cut the blubber so that it could be peeled off in huge strips using steam-winch drivers. One, or perhaps two, chasers towed in the mammal for up to 20 km to the station. In later years, the Perano's whaling mother ships, such as the Torea, towed in the catch with a whale lashed to either side. Once at the whaling station, a whale was winched up the slipway. Flensing off the blubber was done on the concrete deck.
