A black and white photograph showing flensers at work in Perano's whaling station at Fishing Bay (Whekenui Bay)* [see below] in Queen Charlotte Sound. The men are using a two-man electrically driven chainsaw. The whaling station closed down in 1964.
This is a copy of a Norm Brayshaw copy, but the typed information on card and the original copy with Norm's photograph number on it have been separated or lost. The number 118 is on the back of the photograph and these pencilled numbers are a now (2009) unknown part of Norm's numbering system (see catalogue record 2009.067.0088). There is no negative.
A scan of this photograph will be used in the Changing European History Gallery 3 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009.

"I first went down to Fishing Bay to work when I was 14. Fishing Bay? That's what we always called it, although it's marked "Whekenui" on the map. That's even closer to Cook Strait than the original whaling station at Te Awaiti isn't it? Yes. But you have to remember that "Tar White" - as the old whalers used to call Te Awaiti - had long gone by the time the Peranoes set up the whaling station at Fishing Bay."
