Caption December 2009: The opening of the Railway Station at Ward in 1911. Most of the people gathered here, dressed in their best, represent settlers who began on new farms, subdivided only six years earlier, from the former Starborough Station. The event meant the beginning of a new way of life for them - travel by train carriages; and cheaper, faster carting of stock to the Picton freezing works. Ward was about as far as the Picton to Christchurch trunk line had progressed. It took another 34 years before Ward residents could catch the train to Canterbury.
