A black and white mounted photograph of the opening of the Ward Railway Station in 1911 showing a large group of people waiting beside the station. Pencilled on the back in an unknown hand is, "Opening of Ward railway station. Ex - O.L. Watson."
A scan of this photograph will be used in the Changing European History Gallery 3 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009.

Caption December 2009:
The opening of the Railway Station at Ward in 1911. Most of the people gathered here, dressed in their best, represent settlers who began on new farms, subdivided only six years earlier, from the former Starborough Station.
The event meant the beginning of a new way of life for them - travel by train carriages; and cheaper, faster carting of stock to the Picton freezing works. Ward was about as far as the Picton to Christchurch trunk line had progressed. It took another 34 years before Ward residents could
catch the train to Canterbury. |
