A black and white photograph showing eight men assembling a diesel excavator for using on the South Island Main Trunk railway line [S.I.M.T.]
Information as typed by Norm Brayshaw: "Rail and Road. Men engaged on assembling a diesel excavator on the renewed construction of the S.I.M.T. railway in 1936, at this time the remaining 78 miles was the hardest for construction and machinery was used on a larged [larger] scale than any previous undertaking."
Copied by Norm Brayshaw in 1962 from Weekly news 1936. Includes a negative.
A scan of this photograph will be used in the Changing European History Gallery 3 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009. ................................................................................................................................................................................Caption December 2009: Men engaged in assembling a diesel excavator on the renewed construction of the South Island main trunk line, in 1936. The Labour Government was keen to complete the line, started from Picton in 1872. Modern machinery had a much greater role in the construction of railway lines than had been the case in the past. |
