There were rough fords, steep gradients and dramatic descents, on the rutted road down the Awatere Valley to Seddon. From there, the bales went by rail to Blenheim's wool stores. The drivers had high seats, from there they could reach the shoe brake on the large back wheels. The journey, of around 100 km, would take the teams at least three days to complete.
