Description |
"Hikers One" radio receiver (crystal set). This display was set up by the late J.D. Finnie. The ear-phones were his own, given to him in 1928.
From the early 1940s, until the coming of the transistor radio, the "Hiker's One" was a very popular set. The parts were few and cheap and the set was easily constructed by those with a minimum of wireless skill. Local stations were received on the ear-phones at good strength, and by careful adjustment distant signals could be received. The original valve was the type 49, but when supplies of this valve dwindled during World War 2 type 1Q5GT was found to be a good substitute. An additional valve giving extra volume could be added to a "Hikers One", and some "Hikers Two" were cabable of operating speakers.
The advertisment seen in image one is from page 104 of the "1949-50 Lamphouse Annual" and shows the improved "Hikers One" kitset.
