Description |
Brass button stick. 23 is marked into the metal above 11 21 on one side (see image 3) and where this marking is that side of the object is broken in half. A button stick was an essential tool for cleaning brass buttons and white piping and prevented the uniform and equipment from being marked and damaged by the cleaning materials.
Found in a wall on the Edwin Fox during restoration. During the ship's lifetime objects had fallen down the walls and got caught in the knees (a bent piece of wood used as a brace).
